DIY TIPS
Preparation is key. Below are some handy tips 💡
💡To remove stubborn old glue from the channel, try using a heat gun or hair dryer to soften it up before scraping.
💡If you find that the old cane webbing was fastened into channel using staples, remove as many as you possibly can, and punch the remaining as flat as possible.
💡Round off the inside edge of channel (ie. where the cane webbing turns into channel) with sanding paper to reduce risk of 'cutting' the sheet.
💡Soak rattan sheet for 20-30 minutes in water to make it more pliable and easier to wedge into channel.
💡Use a blunt butter knife (eg. IKEA plastic knife for kids) to wedge cane webbing into channel.
💡Use a sharp stanley knife to trim off excess cane from channel.
💡Apply a bead of wood glue into channel and gently tap round spline into channel.
❌Do not seal the back side (porous rough side) with any varnish. This will cause the cane webbing to dry out and become brittle.
